Microscopy Specialist (m/f)

The Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP), the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) and the Gregor Mendel Institute of Molecular Plant Biology (GMI) are highly renowned basic biomedical research institutes located at the Vienna BioCenter. Their common goal is to uncover fundamental molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie complex biological phenomena.

Microscopy Specialist (m/f)

The operation of the BioOptics Core Facility is based on a cooperation of Boehringer Ingelheim and the Austrian Academy of Sciences and provides services to 36 research groups and 450 scientists from over 40 countries. The facility provides the researchers at the IMP/IMBA/GMI with service in flow cytometry, microscopy and image analysis. Your main tasks:

The primary responsibility of the microscopy specialist is to provide training on all instrumentation and guidance concerning all microscopy-related subjects, including project planning, sample preparation and staining, microscope selection, evaluation and configuration. In addition, the person filling this position is involved in maintenance of the instrument park as well as regular performance checks of the optical systems.

Your qualifications:

A solid background in light-microscopy techniques and their application to biological questions as well as the readiness to teach and work with multiple users is required, experience in instrument automation and image analysis using Python or similar is a strong asset.

The candidate should be able to work as part of a team, be highly self-motivated reliable and well organized. Fluency in English together with good communication and interpersonal skills are required, basic skills in German are advantageous. The candidate should be an enthusiastic, service-oriented team player willing to help scientists with basic and advanced aspects of microscopy.

Our offer:

The institutes, embedded in the Vienna BioCenter (VBC), are offering the opportunity to work in a dynamic international environment with excellent benefits including child support centre, subsidized cafeteria and training courses. The yearly gross salary starts from € 42.000, - depending on qualification and experience. The position is available from November 1st 2018 and is initially limited to one year with the option to prolong.
